Have Fun On Spring Break, But Be Safe!

Part 1 of 2

Being safe over spring break can mean many things. It can be simple- like wearing sunscreen outdoors, or very difficult- as in having conversations with a teenager about the dangers of binge-drinking and the “hook-up” culture.

In this blog entry, we are going to cover some basic travel tips that will help keep you safe, especially if you are planning to travel abroad. Next time, we will dive deeper into some ideas for keeping your high school and college-age kids safe if they are planning a trip with friends over spring break.

The Basics

  • Make sure you plan for the weather- Check your weather app for your destination. Bring appropriate clothing, and plenty of sunscreen, bug spray, chapstick, etc.
  • If you or your loved ones are traveling out of the country, check the State Department website for travel warnings in the area, and register your trip.
  • Be sure to map out your hotel, and the nearest embassy (if you are traveling out of the country), hospital, and police station. Print a hard copy to keep with you in case your phone goes dead. If there is an emergency, the last thing you want to be doing is trying to figure out where emergency services are located.
  • If English is not spoken where you are traveling, carry business cards from your hotel with you, to hand to taxi drivers or public transportation.
  • Keep pertinent medical information, such as drug allergies handy or prominently displayed on your person.
  • Make sure you follow all local regulations, environmental warnings, and recommendations. These rules are there to keep you safe.
  • Avoid alcohol and hot sun. You can be at risk for dehydration and heatstroke.
